On 23 and 24 November 2015, the VCDNP and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) organized a workshop on nuclear non-proliferation entitled "Latest Trends in Nuclear Non-Proliferation". The workshop convened researchers, academics, and representatives from regulatory authorities and international non-proliferation experts from Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.

Workshop participants

Building on previous SSM projects promoting non-proliferation education with Russian and Ukrainian universities—and more recently in Moldova and Georgia—the aims of the workshop held at the VCDNP were threefold: to review the latest trends in nuclear non-proliferation; to exchange experiences in teaching and education in nuclear non-proliferation; and to discuss how to promote further cooperation between the partners. The workshop consisted of presentations and interactive discussion sessions. Key topics of discussion included: the 2015 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT); the nuclear deal with Iran; and the evolving humanitarian initiative vis-à-vis nuclear disarmament. An additional session was dedicated to discussing various nuclear non-proliferation education activities and innovative approaches to delivering non-proliferation information. Throughout the two-day workshop, participants discussed the various substantive issues facing the nuclear non-proliferation regime, actively exchanging views and sharing regional perspectives on these issues as well as on their experiences in non-proliferation education.

In addition to the formal workshop sessions, the participants had the opportunity to visit the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.
