Summer 2014 VCDNP Internship

The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP), an international non-governmental organization based in Vienna, Austria, is looking for graduate-level student interns with scientific and/or policy backgrounds and interest in nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament issues. The Center's mission is to facilitate result-oriented dialogue among national governments, international organizations, and civil society on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and to conduct research, education and training programs on these issues. The VCDNP is managed by the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (a graduate school of Middlebury College), USA.

The VCDNP invites applications for its Summer 2014 unpaid internship for graduate students. During his/her internship, the intern will be expected to:

  1. Conduct an independent research project on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation or related field;
  2. Work alongside a senior expert at the VCDNP on ongoing research projects;
  3. Contribute to programmatic activities at VCDNP.

The internship includes:

  • Development and implementation of a research project on a nuclear non-proliferation or disarmament topic supervised by researchers or advisors of the VCDNP;
  • Participation in lectures, seminars, and conferences arranged by the VCDNP, international organizations, and think tanks in Vienna;
  • Analytical and administrative work under one or several research, educational, or outreach projects of the VCDNP;
  • Opportunity to interact and interview specialists from the IAEA, CTBTO, and other international organizations in Vienna, as well as representatives from national governments and academia;
  • Performance of other related duties as requested.

Requirements

The internship is open to advanced graduate students and recent graduates from science and policy programs. Applicants should be able to demonstrate their interest in non-proliferation and disarmament policy issues. Strong writing skills and excellent command of English are required.

Deadline for Application and Additional Information

Duration: This is a 3-5 month unpaid internship that requires physical presence in Vienna, Austria.

Appointment Date: Position is expected to start 2 June 2014, but is open to negotiation.

The deadline for submission of applications is 31 March 2014.

Physical Effort/Environment

The VCDNP maintains a smoke-free and drug-free workplace. Position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
