Internship Description

The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP), an international non-governmental organization based in Vienna, Austria, was opened in spring 2011. Its mission is to facilitate result-oriented dialogue among national governments, international organizations, and civil society on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and to conduct research, education and training programs on these issues. The VCDNP is managed by the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (a graduate school of Middlebury College), USA.

The VCDNP invites applications for its Summer 2012 unpaid internship for graduate students. During his/her internship, the intern will be expected to: (1) conduct an independent research project on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation or related field and (2) contribute to ongoing research and programmatic activities at VCDNP.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Development and implementation of a research project on a nuclear non-proliferation or disarmament topic supervised by researchers or advisors of the VCDNP;
• Participation in lectures, seminars, and conferences arranged by the VCDNP, international organizations, and think tanks in Vienna;
• Analytical and administrative work under one or several research, educational, or outreach projects of the VCDNP;
• Opportunity to interact and interview specialists from the IAEA, CTBTO, and other international organizations in Vienna, as well as representatives from national governments and academia;
• Performance of other related duties as requested.

3-6 months.

Requirements

The internship is open to advanced graduate students and recent graduates from science and policy programs. Prior familiarity with nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation topics is desirable but not mandatory. The applicant, however, must demonstrate interest in nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation and relevant issues.

Deadline for Application and Additional Information

This is a three- to six-month unpaid internship that requires physical presence in Vienna, Austria. Appointment date: position is expected to start June 1, 2012. A later start date will also be considered. The deadline for submission of applications is April 25, 2012.

Physical Effort/Environment

The VCDNP maintains a smoke-free and drug-free workplace. Position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
