With 2016 marking the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident and the 5th anniversary of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, this timely workshop sought to highlight lessons learned for strengthening nuclear safety and assess the significant achievements made thus far. These achievements include: the completion of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety; the release of the IAEA report on the Fukushima Daiichi accident; the adoption of the Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety; and the entry into force of the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage (CSC). H.E. Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano’s keynote address to the workshop highlighted the need to reaffirm the importance of nuclear safety and renew our commitment to improving nuclear safety as a matter of national and international concern.
