The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) will offer an in-person intensive short course on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament policy issues specifically designed for diplomats and practitioners from 21 to 25 September 2026 at the VCDNP office in Vienna, Austria.

Taught by experts from the VCDNP and Vienna-based international organisations, as well as other internationally recognised professionals, the one-week programme will include: an extended analysis of the non-proliferation regime; an overview of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and its associated institutions and mechanisms; the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, including their policymaking organs and activities; and an assessment of current challenges to nuclear non-proliferation, arms control, disarmament and nuclear security.

The language of instruction is English; therefore, strong command of the English language is essential for successful completion of the course.

Reviews from previous course participants:

“Necessary for any diplomat serving in Vienna or in the field of non-proliferation and/or disarmament.”

“I came with zero to no knowledge in the subject, now I can confidently say that I can adequately negotiate on behalf of my state on the subject going forward.”

“Especially to those of us from smaller countries/missions who cover multiple topics in their portfolio, the scope covered is extremely useful to get a broad overview of all relevant topics.”

The tuition fee for the course is 1200 Euros. The organisers are in a position to waive the tuition fee for select participants from developing countries. Please indicate in your application if you would like to request the waiver.

The organisers will also be able to offer a few select participants from developing countries travelling from national capitals or duty stations outside of Vienna assistance with their flight and hotel accommodation. Please indicate in your application if you would like to apply for travel support.

The deadline for applications isthe close of business Central European Summer Time on 20 July 2026, but it is recommended that applications be submitted as early as possible. Due to the high volume of applications received, the VCDNP will not consider late applications. The VCDNP strongly encourages applications from women and candidates from developing countries.

All application materials should be submitted in English via the online application form below. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please note the online form requires that applicants upload the following documents in PDF format:
