The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) cordially invites you to attend an in-person seminar titled “Strategic Missile Defence: Evolving Technical and Policy Challenges”. The event will take place on Wednesday, 28 May 2025 from 13:00 to 14:00 in the VCDNP Conference Room. Light refreshments will be served from 12:45.

For decades, the United States has pursued ballistic missile defence (BMD) capabilities to counter strategic threats. The most mature operational system is the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD), designed to intercept intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), particularly those launched by North Korea, during their midcourse phase of flight. Recently, US policy has expanded to include more ambitious efforts aimed at developing missile defence and broader missile defeat strategies capable of addressing advanced threats from near-peer adversaries.

During the seminar, Professor James Wells will present his findings on the formidable technological hurdles inherent in this expanded mission and consider the broader strategic and deterrence implications of such an effort.

Speakers:

  • Ambassador Prof. James Wells, Professor of Physics, Department of Physics & Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan

The seminar will be moderated by VCDNP Executive Director Elena K. Sokova.

We kindly ask you to RSVP for in-person participation using the registration link below.
