
Dr. Se Young Jang is a diplomatic historian of contemporary Korea whose work explores the domestic, regional and global dimensions of nuclear development on the Korean Peninsula, across both civilian and military domains. She joined the VCDNP in June 2026 as a Marie Skłodowska‑Curie Fellow.
Dr. Jang is a former South Korean diplomat who specialised in chemical and biological weapons, as well as a UN Disarmament Fellow in 2009. Dr. Jang has held pre- and post-doctoral appointments at George Washington University, Harvard Kennedy School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Her research has appeared in academic and policy outlets. She is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of History at the University of Vienna and previously served as Assistant Professor of Korean Studies at Leiden University (2019–2023). Her current project examines the history of relations between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the two Koreas.
Her latest book, in Korean, is entitled “The Signing and Ratification of the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) by South Korea, 1968–1975”.
Dr. Jang received a PhD in International History from the Geneva Graduate Institute in Switzerland in 2017. She also holds a Bachelor of Aarts in Consumer Studies and Political Science and a Master of Arts in International Relations from Seoul National University in South Korea.
