On 15 November 2018, VCDNP Senior Fellow Angela Kane visited Nagasaki, Japan for a number of events that centered around the global elimination of nuclear weapons. In addition to a third meeting of the Group of Eminent Persons for Substantive Advancement of Nuclear Disarmament, Ms. Kane delivered remarks to a new exhibit on nuclear disarmament, as well as to the Sixth Nagasaki Global Citizens' Assembly for Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
The exhibit, entitled "Everything You Treasure - For a World Free From Nuclear Weapons," was organized jointly by Soka Gakkai International and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. It seeks to illustrate the terrible power of nuclear weapons and the ongoing threat that they pose to humanity. In particular, the exhibit highlights humanitarian challenges associated with the use of nuclear weapons, as well as those to the environment, human health, the economy, human rights, energy, science and global politics. The exhibit also highlights the disproportionate effect of nuclear weapons on women over men, as well as generational complexities in the nuclear weapons debate. The exhibit has been featured at various international conferences since 2012, including the Second Preparatory Committee for the 2015 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The Japanese daily newspaper Seikyo Shimbun has since published an article featuring Ms. Kane's participation in the exhibit.
Ms. Kane also participated in a panel discussion, entitled "Peace Building and Provision for Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula - Nuclear Weapon-Free Future of North-East Asia," at the Sixth Nagasaki Global Citizens' Assembly for Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Other panelists included experts from Japan, Australia, China, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea and the Russian Federation.
