VCDNP Executive Director Elena Sokova discussed some of the challenges that the new Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi and the Agency itself will face in an interview with Xinhua News Agency, published on 2 December 2019.

Ms. Sokova pointed to the evolving situation with the IAEA's verification of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), "particularly as the divide between the United States, the West, and the Russian Federation continues to grow, and the two sides are less and less keen on finding a compromise and negotiate on key nonproliferation issues."

In this regard, Ms. Sokova said that continued impartiality will be critical for the IAEA's role in JCPOA implementation and that that Director General Grossi will need to be able "to successfully play the balancing act and maintain neutrality of the IAEA."

Concluding her interview, Ms. Sokova expressed the view that the IAEA will become more open, transparent and active in dialogue with Member States under Director General Grossi's leadership.
