On 3 July 2025, the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) and the Vienna Office of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) hosted a webinar featuring UN Under-Secretary-General of Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu. The discussion focused on current challenges to the global disarmament regime, particularly threats to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and the need for greater multilateral cooperation. Ms. Nakamitsu emphasized the link between military spending and sustainable development, shared updates on the UN80 reform initiative, and highlighted the vital role of the Vienna community in supporting disarmament efforts. The event concluded with a Q&A session, where participants explored topics such as disarmament education, youth engagement, and the use of diplomatic tools to prevent conflict and strengthen global security.
