The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) is recruiting an intern for summer 2026, under the Japan Chair for a World without Nuclear Weapons programme. Eligible applicants must be Japanese nationals. 

The VCDNP is an international non-governmental organisation based in Vienna, Austria. The Center conducts research, facilitates dialogue, and builds capacity on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation issues.

Internship Details

The duration of the internship is two to three months, starting in summer 2026, and will take place in person in Vienna, Austria. The start time is flexible. The exact dates will be agreed between the VCDNP and the successful candidate. The VCDNP will cover the intern’s economy roundtrip airfare to and from Vienna and provide a monthly stipend of 1,000 Euro to offset living expenses.

The intern will:

  • Conduct research on nuclear disarmament issues in support of the Japan Chair for a World without Nuclear Weapons programme
  • Assist with drafting and editing of publications as required
  • Contribute to programmatic activities at the VCDNP, including events, lectures, webinars, courses, and conferences
  • Have the opportunity to work alongside VCDNP researchers and interact with experts from the IAEA, CTBTO, and other international organisations in Vienna, as well as representatives from national governments and academia
  • Perform other related tasks as requested

Skills and Requirements

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be Japanese nationals
  • Work towards or have recently completed a graduate university degree in a field related to the VCDNP’s work, for example, international relations, political science, or a degree in natural sciences, such as nuclear physics
  • Have a strong interest in nuclear disarmament and multilateral diplomacy
  • Have experience in conducting research projects
  • Possess strong writing skills and an excellent command of the English language
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office

Previous experience in organising events and knowledge of other software applications as well as social media platforms are assets.

The successful candidate will be required to obtain a visa or other authorisation to work in Austria.

The position requires light to moderate physical effort and the ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
