The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) cordially invites you to a seminar on safety, security, and safeguards (3S) by design for small modular reactors (SMRs) to take place on 27 March 2025 from 12:30 to 14:00 (CET). The seminar will build on and discuss the outcomes of the 2024 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Conference on Small Modular Reactors and their Applications.
As SMRs and other advanced reactors approach commercial deployment, it is essential to ensure that they meet current international standards of safety, security, and safeguards. The concept of 3S by Design – which involves the comprehensive integration of these elements at every stage of the design process – is crucial for ensuring their effective, efficient, and mutually complementary implementation. Incorporating these elements from the design stage could also reduce the regulatory burden for end users.
During the seminar, speakers will discuss the benefits of 3S by Design approaches for SMRs and other advanced reactors, the status of the 3S by Design concept, and views on its implementation. The discussion will integrate the outcomes from three technical sessions during the IAEA conference.
A light lunch and refreshments will be served from 12:00.

The seminar will be moderated by VCDNP Senior Research Associate Noah Mayhew.
