The Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) cordially invites you to attend a webinar presenting the report on “Articulating the Security Concerns of TPNW States Parties," which will be held on Monday, 31 March 2025, from 11:00 to 12:30 Central European Summer Time (CEST) via Zoom.
The report is a product of the intersessional consultative process established by States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in 2023 to address the apparent disconnect between the humanitarian- and security-centred discourses on nuclear weapons in international fora. TPNW States Parties engaged in the consultative process to better articulate their security concerns emanating from the existence of nuclear weapons and find ways to improve substantive engagement on the subject.
The report examines assumptions underlying nuclear deterrence policies, highlights uncertainties associated with nuclear deterrence and juxtaposes them with the available data on the consequences of nuclear weapon use, emphasizing their global and catastrophic nature. It also contains recommendations on the argumentation, messaging and avenues for engagement in dialogue with States relying on nuclear deterrence
Ambassador Alexander Kmentt of Austria, who chaired the consultative process, will present the findings and recommendations of the report and potential further steps for the TPNW States Parties. Dr. Oliver Meier will provide commentary on the report.
Speakers:
Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova, Japan Chair for a World without Nuclear Weapons at the VCDNP, will moderate the webinar.
