A new article by VCDNP Non-Resident Senior Fellow John Carlson, published in the Luxembourg International Forum on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe's publication "Arms Control: Burden of Change," addresses the role that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) could play at the upcoming Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the NPT's entry into force, Mr. Carlson notes the pronounced frustration of many non-nuclear-weapon states, which gave rise to the Humanitarian Initiative and, ultimately, to the TPNW itself. He emphasises that the TPNW must be complementary to the NPT in order for it to fulfil the purpose for which its drafters intended. In the article, Mr. Carlson also outlines 11 steps that could be taken in order to advance the disarmament pillar of the NPT, as well as to help ensure success at the 2020 Review Conference.
