Nuclear technologies contribute significantly to sustainable development, including for medical applications. The radioactive sources that are used in many of these technologies require that appropriate nuclear safety and security measures are put in place and maintained. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and individual States provide essential support to countries in the safe and secure management of these sources.

The new VCDNP fact sheet, authored by VCDNP Senior Research Associate Ingrid Kirsten, highlights the benefits of nuclear technologies for medical applications, the support that the IAEA provides in the transfer and application of these technologies and shares the experiences of Albania, Ghana and Pakistan.

The fact sheet builds on two VCDNP panel discussions: "Radioactive Sources and Sustainable Development," convened on on 15 March 2018; and "The Sustainable Use of Nuclear and Other Radioactive Material for Peaceful Purposes," held on 21 March 2019.
