Areas of Research

Angela Kane is a well-known expert in political relations and negotiations, peace operations and disarmament, operating in a complex multilateral environment.

Background

Angela Kane joined the VCDNP as a Senior Fellow in October 2015. Since then, she has also been active in other organizations, serving as Vice President, International Institute for Peace, Vienna; Visiting Professor, Paris School of International Affairs, SciencesPo; Visiting Professor, Tsinghua University Schwarzman Scholars, Beijing.  She is also a Professorial Lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna.

From 2021 to 2022, she was appointed the Sam Nunn Distinguished Fellow at the Nuclear Threat Initiative in Washington and continues as a Senior Adviser to the NTI | Bio team. She is working on Global Catastrophic Biological Risks (GCBR) and a Joint Assessment Mechanism to determine pandemic origins.

Kane has been working with the World Economic Forum, serving as the Chair of the Council on Weapons of Mass Destruction and the Co-Chair of the Global Future Council on the Korean Peninsula. She served for six years on the Council of the United Nations University, as Member and then Chair (until 2022). She is a Member of the International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons Disarmament, appointed by Prime Minister Kishida of Japan in 2022; Senior Member, European Leadership Network; Reserve Member, High-Level Group on Artificial Intelligence of the European AI Alliance; Director of the Board, Dialogue Advisory Group, Amsterdam; Member, United Europe; Member, Global Alliance of Leaders, Astana Club. She also sits on numerous Boards of NGOs in Europe, United States, and Asia.

Education and Honours

Ms. Kane studied at the University of München and holds degrees from Bryn Mawr College and the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. She received an Honorary Doctorate from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California.

She was awarded the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal of Honour, awarded by Foreign Minister Steinmeier, November 2016. Austria bestowed on her Das Grosse Goldene Ehrenzeichen mit dem Stern, awarded by President Fischer, May 2016 (Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Star for Services to the Republic of Austria). From Germany Ms. Kane received Das Grosse Verdienstkreuz des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, awarded by President Gauck, June 2015 (Order of Merit of Germany, second-highest level).
