On 24 June 2022, the VCDNP and the Toda Peace Institute convened a one-day workshop to discuss the scope for progress in nuclear arms control and disarmament in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The international workshop of experts and diplomats concluded that the assumptions on which nuclear deterrence is based should be challenged and the dogma that nuclear deterrence will always be effective should be questioned.

Joint one-day workshop with Toda Institute at the VCDNP Conference Room

The workshop took place immediately after the First Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). In this regard, workshop participants noted the role that civil society and like-minded States played in bringing the TPNW into force. Participants also discussed the impact of the war in Ukraine on the perceived value of nuclear deterrence, as well as the relationship of the TPNW with other treaties and political alliances.
