On 27 May 2026, the VCDNP, within the framework of the Young Women and Next Generation Initiative (YWNGI), hosted a virtual event titled Reflecting on the Outcomes of the NPT: a Conversation with EU Special Envoy for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Stephan Klement.

The discussion was moderated by Elena K. Sokova, Executive Director of the VCDNP.

During the event, Amb. Klement reflected on the outcomes of the recent Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, which ended without a consensus document for the third consecutive review cycle.

Amb. Klement addressed key developments and major divisions that shaped the negotiations, framing them within the broader geopolitical context and the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The conversation also explored the complexities of contemporary European diplomacy, including the process of balancing diverse perspectives and priorities among EU member states in the field of security and disarmament policy. In this context, Amb. Klement emphasized the EU’s growing role as a platform for dialogue, cooperation, and policy innovation, including on issues related to gender perspectives.

The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, during which participants engaged with Amb. Klement on a range of topics, including the practical implications of not reaching an outcome document and issues likely to dominate the next review cycle. He also highlighted the skills necessary for future leaders and diplomats engaging in these forums.

The webinar was aimed at the next generation of professionals in the field and brought together over 25 participants, including current and former mentees of the YWNGI.

The YWNGI, an initiative by the VCDNP within the framework of the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPDC), aims to inspire young women and the next generation to explore careers in non-proliferation, arms control, and disarmament. The initiative provides mentorship, workshops, and outreach opportunities to address gender and age imbalances in the field.

The VCDNP thanks the European Union for supporting the YWNGI and this event.
