In September 2023, Springer published the book Russia’s War on Ukraine: the Implications for the Global Nuclear Order.

VCDNP Senior Fellow Dr. Nikolai Sokov and VCDNP Senior Research Associate Federica Dall’Arche contributed to the book with two chapters, on US-Russian bilateral arms control relations and the gendered risks deriving from the war, respectively.

In his chapter, Dr. Sokov explores the impact of the war against Ukraine on US-Russian arms control diplomacy, arguing that, while the war has triggered an acute crisis, the United States and Russia need to return to the original notion of arms control as it was conceptualised in the early 1960s: prevention or, at least, reduction of the risk of nuclear war.

In her chapter, Ms. Dall’Arche addresses the connection between gender, weapons, and arms control, underscoring a crucial link often overlooked. Illustrating how the probability of becoming a victim of certain weapons can differ greatly depending on individuals’ biological characteristics (sex) and on societal/cultural expectations assigned to individuals (gender), the chapter underlines the gender-specific risks deriving from Russia's war on Ukraine.
