Security, Nuclear Weapons and the Impact of the War in Ukraine: VCDNP and IAI visit the University of Turin

On 5 May, the VCDNP and IAI visited the University of Turin as part of the EUNPDC effort to engage the next generation in non-proliferation, disarmament and arms control through the Young Women and Next Generation Initiative (YWNGI).

On 5 May, as part of the Young Women and Next Generation Initiative (YWNGI), the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) and the International Affairs Institute (IAI) visited the University of Turin. The visit was the first of a set of visits planned through the YWNGI, as part of the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium (EUNPDC) effort to engage the next generation in non-proliferation, disarmament and arms control.

The event, organized in cooperation with the University of Turin, featured two panels.

The first panel was dedicated to the current geopolitical situation in Europe, where experts assessed the origins of the war, the threaten potential use of nuclear weapons, and analyzed the impact of the war in Ukraine on the non-proliferation and disarmament regime.

The panel was composed by:

  • Ettore Greco, Executive Vice President, International Affairs Institute (IAI), Rome
  • Nikolai Sokov, Senior Fellow at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation
  • Federica Dall’Arche, Senior Research Associate at the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

The second panel was dedicated to the work of the EUNPDC and to opportunities for the next generation in the field and was composed by:

  • Manuel Herrera, Researcher at the International Affairs Institute (IAI) Rome, and PhD student at the King Juan Carlos University, Madrid.
  • Elena K. Sokova, Executive Director, Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation

Both panel discussions were opened and moderated by Associate Professor of Political Science of the University of Turin, Stefano Ruzza.
